MIKE BENJAMIN: Punch List for MID-TERM CRIT

  1. First of all, I want to say that I think I do get your project and definitely see the ART in it. You are changing the way we view an established institution. I think art is all about re-presenting a subject to a public – the more interdisciplinary the better. All of us are in some way re-working and re-arranging a space- finding a solution to a problem.
Sure you dealing with concepts of creativity and innovation – inherent to art – but you reversing the roles they currently play in our society. Bringing creativity back into the community and environment seems like a project that definitely applies to where the art world/market is today and the world as a whole.
I see this same problem with creativity that you talk about. We used to need our creativity and innovation in order to survive – now most people, or supposed non-artists, view art and creativity as unnecessary or impractical. There is not an effort to look or think beyond the surface of the object - to the ongoing creative processes. People say, Oh I can’t even draw a straight line – before they have even tried. Every other day one of my parent’s friends asks me what I could possibly do with my art major other than teach art – but maybe they are right, maybe that’s what we still need– there is still a majority of people that are scared of their own creativity. This idea of site-specific outdoor classroom could revive creative experiences – making them practical and part of our habitat again.

As far as the Punch list – here are some of the main points (may have missed a few):

-Figure out what you are putting in display cases – think about one containing documents and the other as a miniature topographical landscape.
-Where display cases are going – what is in the gallery?

-Who are you in this project? More of a Fred Wilson or a facilitator like Ciscle?

    - Present a more specific project/assignment within the project?

    - Logistics of transportation to site / Where discussions are going to take place
